Remove entries from select list

I seriously cannot be the only one with issues of removing an entry from a select list (dropdown)
When I highlight the item I want to delete, hit delete, the entire list of items disappears, then when I commit the changes (even though I am trying to delete just one) the fields refresh and nothing was deleted.

I know I am not the only person this is not working for, please tell me I don't have to delete it from the db every time I need to remove an entry?
